The Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will celebrate in 2013 its fiftieth anniversary. On this occasion we are organizing a program of activities to be carried out throughout the year, which include the voting "50 years, 50 molecules", the exhibition "Molecules of Life: 50 years of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Spain" and the lecture series "SEBBM´s Fiftieth Anniversary".

"Molecules of Life: 50 years of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Spain" is a temporary exhibition that seeks to bring basic educational concepts of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to audiences. The opening will take place on September 2 at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, coinciding with the celebration of SEBBM´s Congress. The contents proposed to the visitor imply an interactive tour among the basic molecules that constitute the cells of our body, promote our health and participate in our daily lives. The exhibition is funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) - Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (FECYT). Among the modules offered there will be one devoted to "Sea Molecules", sponsored by the Spanish biotechnology company Zeltia, a module devoted to "Antifungals", sponsored by MSD, and a module devoted to "Plasma Proteins", sponsored by Grifols. The exhibition will also be sponsored by the company Bio-Rad and it will count on the collaboration of RNE.

Since January 1st, in "50 years, 50 molecules", site visitors are able to vote for their favourite molecule among 50 shortlisted, helping to define the molecules included in the exhibition. With this kind of popular vote and interactive exhibition our aim is to get the public to participate and get directly involved.

The outreach lecture series "SEBBM´s Fiftieth Anniversary" is being held in Madrid's emblematic buildings. Its objectives are to review the history of the SEBBM, publicize its participation and contributions to the Spanish society of the past 50 years, bringing the figures of Santiago Ramon y Cajal, Severo Ochoa and Alberto Sols to the general public, and analyze from different prospects the present and future of scientific research. We wish to thank CIDI+ Biomed for filming the conferences.

The information will appear on time in our website and in our SEBBM Facebook and Twitter.
