Madrid, 8 January 2010

The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) has unanimously elected Joan Guinovart, former President of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) and current President of the Spanish Confederation of Scientific Societies (COSCE), its new Treasurer.

Following the decease on last September of its previous Treasurer Jan Joep de Pont, the IUBMB initiated the process to call an election, as established in its articles of association, and started the procedure for the proposal of candidates.

The SEBBM decided to present Joan Guinovart because of his extensive experience in the management of international scientific societies, for instance by being a member of the FEBS´ Executive Committee for nine years. Two other candidacies were presented as well by the Dutch society and the Moroccan society. After evaluating all three, the Nomination Committee decided to propose Joan Guinovart for the General Assembly to begin voting.

At the electronic voting, 51 of the 88 delegates that make up the Assembly voted for Joan Guinovart, and none of them voted against him.

The SEBBM wants to congratulate Joan for being elected with such a clear and unanimous support, and thank him for his availabity and dedication while offering himself to accept this high responsibility.
