Scientists have identified a particular gene that plays a role in the development of age-related hearing loss (ARHL). A group of 46 genes associated with ARHL was selected - thanks in part to animal models - and analysed, with one gene (SLC9A3R1) identified as a key culprit. The work drew upon the talents of scientists at Imperial College London, UK; the Sidra Medical and Research Center, Qatar; the University of Trieste and the Institute for Maternal and Child Health-IRCCS “Burlo Garofolo” (both in Italy). It follows a 2015 breakthrough involving Trieste's Giorgia Girotto, in which a genetically altered mouse model exposed a human mutation which prompts hereditary hearing loss (Source: EARA).
