University of Alicante scientist Francis Mojica has been one of the five selected candidates to receive the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research for 2017, the most prestigious award in the United States and one of the most important in Medicine and Biomedical research worldwide.

The five researchers awarded this year, other than the discoverer of CRISPR, are Emmanuelle Charpentier, Jennifer Doudna, Luciano Marraffini and Feng Zhang.

The award recognises the importance of the contributions that have been made by the five award-winners in the development of CRISPR-Cas9, a genetic engineering technology that takes advantage of a natural process in the bacterial immune system. Technology has been turned upside down in the field of biomedical research and has provided new hope for the treatment of diseases, especially those involving genetics.
